On November 18, 2010, a group of 50 enthusiastic students, parents and teachers from the Marin Horizon School in Mill Valley participated in the first ever “Water Walk” field trip around Lake Lagunitas. The purpose of this new field trip, offered by Water Conservation staff, is to educate students about the Mt. Tamalpais Watershed and to inspire them to be good stewards of the land—now and in the future.
The area around Lake Lagunitas provided an excellent opportunity for learning about plant communities, plant adaptations, invasive species, watershed ecology and water conservation in an outdoor, hands-on setting. Students collected information about these topics in journals provided by MMWD. The next Water Walk field trip is scheduled for December 3 with approximately 60 students from the Lycée Français La Pérouse School in Corte Madera.
Water Walks are for students in grades 3-5. To learn more about Water Walks—as well as other field trips and programs for schools in our service area—visit our website.
