Nature offers gifts that are often overlooked during this busy time of year. During the hustle-bustle, we tend to dash from the car into the house loaded down with groceries, packages, and to-do lists trailing behind. If this sounds familiar, may I suggest that you halt before shutting the door and leaving the unseen gifts that cost us nothing but our time. Stop and appreciate the value found in the beauty around you.
Are the trees aglitter with dewdrops from liquefied morning frost? Are the camellias showing off their colors of reds, whites and pinks, or winter daphnes budded and ready to burst with their unforgettable fragrance? How about the narcissus blooming with their perfume filling the air and the holly, nandina, pyracantha and toyon plants laden down by winter berries? Did you notice the citrus and persimmon trees adorned with ornaments of yellow and orange?
Fruits and berries bring an additional gift from nature. Flocks of birds will flit about, enjoying this feast nature provides. Many plants have gone to seed leaving a bounty to sustain our feathered friends. Unplucked fruit in the trees offers a delightful dessert. Are the birds enjoying a bath in the decorative art you thoughtfully provided this summer? Or sipping from a bubbling fountain tucked into the corner of the garden?
Looking up, you might see a flock of late migrating Canadian geese flying in their “v” formation reminding us of the strength that comes with team work. Perhaps a timid deer wanders through in hope of a tasty morsel, a treasure that reminds us of how delicate life can be. Remembering to stop and enjoy our surroundings is a gift we can give to ourselves. These moments are priceless.
Thank you for sharing these garden moments with me through the year. It has been a wonderful gift for me too. Wishing you all a very happy holiday season, merry Christmas and a healthy, prosperous new year.
