You are right. These trays provide various means of watering from the bottom which is better for developing deeper roots! And apparently designed so mosquitoes can’t breed in the standing water. Very clever. Thanks again for passing on the information to all of us.

Thanks for covering this topic, Charlene! I didn’t consider the weight of pots before on balconies; I’ll definitely look into soilless mixes and double-walled containers. And good suggestion about shallow rooted plants – seems obvious but I never thought of it before!

Hi Mike,
Yes, yet another couple of benefits to container planting. You can control the exposure! And what a fabulous idea about the tomato plants. I would imagine those fighting oak root fungus could do the same thing. Thanks for sharing. All great ideas!

Scott, Thanks for the tip on keeping those containers off decks . I like using wheels on those holding up the big heavy containers for moving around.

A couple of other reasons to do some container gardening:
– Limited sunlight due to huge trees. Some of the sunniest spots are on the concrete patio.
– Our tomatoes suffered from soil-borne blight. Planting them in large containers with new soil each year means we get healthier plants. AND we can set them where the sun is.
To reduce the reflected heat from the concrete, we spread shredded bark around those pots.
